External User Management

Since the secretary and/or administrators maintain a list of enrolled students, it makes sense to use this information to manage users on external servers. This would allow a student, once enrolled, to have his/her login to workstations, email accounts, and other school based resources added from this information.

This system consists of 2 parts:

  1. Buttons that run scripts to copy the user information (ie. name, student number and password) and/or account changes (reset password, lock or unlock account) to an account on another server.

  2. A script that runs periodically on the external server, to take this user information and add missing user accounts on the external server or reset password or lock/unlock the account.

Add/Reset User Accounts on Other Servers

  1. Click the 'Add' button beside 'External Users'. It will list all students and staff and then below that, in bold, say 'File Copy Complete'. The user file has now been copied to the external server. In 10-15 minutes, any new users will have accounts on the external server. The time it will take for the accounts to appear depends on the time your system administrator has set on the external server between checks for the user file.

  2. Click the 'Reset' button beside 'External Users'. It will show a list of all students with checkboxes to allow passwords to be rest or to lock or unlock user accounts. Check boxes based on the user and what you want to do. Then click any of the 'Continue' buttons (it doesn't matter which one), and the next page will show 'File Copy Complete' when the reset file has been copied to the external server. Again, this will take the same time as the 'Add' process to occur on the external server.
